This website, which contains the digital database of the Lithuanian Dictionary (sign.: IV A 11), is created as a task of the project GA UK No. 520317, the name: The handwritten dictionary of Lithuanian language by František Ladislav Čelakovský. The project is supported by the GA UK (Grant Agency of Charles University). There search is carried out at the Department of East European Studies, Faculty of Arts, Charles University.

The intention of this project lays in the exploration of the relatively unexplored handwritten lexicographic relic from the 1st half of the 19th century deposited in the Library of the National Museum.

The relatively voluminous Lithuanian Dictionary (sign.: IV A 11) contains 1648 lexical articles. Despite unclarity in the authorship of the relic in question, there are many reasons for attributing it to F. L. Čelakovský. This dictionary is important for understanding the history of both the Czech Baltic studies and Czech Slavic studies. It is relevant to the National Revival in the 19th century. The dictionary’s importance lays in the nature of the linguistic purpose: it is not a translation dictionary but rather a study of the crucial matter of Balto-Slavic relations, later explored also by another Charles University professor, August Schleicher. 

The project focuses on these tasks:  

• Creating a digital database of the Lithuanian Dictionary  
• Specifying Čelakovský's intention in the processing of individual dictionary articles 
• Conducting a study of the role of the Lithuanian dictionary in the context of the Czech Baltic studies. 

The main purpose of the project is making this lexicographic relic accessible and releasing it to scientific community.
